ROCKING AN ARTIST’S LEGACY
It’s one thing to plan a 272-page coffee table book worthy of an iconic artist’s life’s work. It’s another thing to print it. Two months, five specialty treatments and 256 plates later, Battlefield had printed a retrospective of Hugh Syme’s artwork that balanced Hugh’s exacting standards with Showtech’s need to keep costs manageable, all in a tight timeline. This project earned Battlefield the 2016 Printer of the Year award from Sappi.

Art of Rush compiles the art I have created for Rush as their art director during our 40 years together. I was delighted and fully confident to award the printing of my book to Jerry and his team at Battlefield. From initial discussions about paper stocks, lamination options, advice on color and spot varnishes, they were knowledgeable and informative about all aspects of printing and fabricating. The team was always so patient and hospitable, encouraging me to attend every stage of the scanning and image preparation and each of several demanding press runs to engage closely with their master printers throughout the entire production. Jerry’s level of attentiveness was evident when he insisted on directly liaising with his book bindery. Excellence is in the details, and Battlefield stands by this credo.

The quality of the printing throughout the entirety of Art of Rush was stellar. It’s one thing to produce a good volume when the images are similar, but the stakes are raised when the content includes artwork with a variety of images, styles and original media that spanned decades. The design and execution of the book binding complemented and unified the content into an exceptional example of the power of print.

This was Hugh’s life’s work. And long before the Sappi award, it was mine, too.
